What it does
The Data Unit Converter translates a digital storage amount between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes - entirely in your browser. Pick a convention and the tool shows your value in every unit at once: decimal (B, KB, MB, GB, TB - each step ×1000, the SI standard storage makers use) or binary (B, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB - each step ×1024, the IEC standard operating systems report). Everything runs 100% client-side, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
It also settles the perennial “why does my 500 GB drive show up as 465 GB?” question: the drive is sold in decimal GB (×1000) but reported by the OS in binary GiB (×1024) - the same bytes, two naming conventions. Read the byte value from the decimal table, switch to binary mode, and the table shows the matching GiB figure.
How to use it
- Pick a base at the top: Decimal · 1000 (KB/MB/GB/TB) or Binary · 1024 (KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB).
- Enter the Value you want to convert.
- Choose the from unit (left control) and the to unit (right), or tap the swap arrow to flip them. The large Result shows the focused from → to conversion.
- Glance at Value in all units to see the amount in every unit of the current base at once - each row has its own Copy button.
- Use Copy share link to send the exact view to someone.

- Two conventions:
KB/MB/GB/TBuse ×1000 (decimal, SI);KiB/MiB/GiB/TiBuse ×1024 (binary, IEC). Switching the base remaps your selected units to the equivalent rank automatically (e.g. MB → MiB). - Cross-base comparison: the tool converts within one base at a time. To compare a decimal figure with a binary one, read its byte value from the table in decimal mode, then switch to binary mode and enter that byte value.
- Shareable: your value and unit choices are encoded in the URL (
?base=…&v=…&from=…&to=…), so a link reproduces the exact view. - Private: all math runs locally - safe for any input.
