Media Metadata Inspector
What it does
Reads the metadata of audio, video and image files directly from their bytes, with parsers we wrote ourselves: MP4 box structure (movie header for duration, track headers for dimensions), ID3v2 tags (title, artist, album — both v2.3 and v2.4, latin-1 and UTF-8/16 text), WAV chunks (PCM format and duration), GIF headers (dimensions), and WebM detection. Recognized or not, you get an honest answer.
Parsing is local and byte-level — nothing uploads, which matters precisely because metadata can leak file paths, editor fingerprints and timestamps.
How to use
- Drop a media file (MP4, M4V, MP3, WAV, GIF, WebM).
- Read the table: type, dimensions, duration, tags, size.
- Drop another file to compare — no reset ceremony.
Examples
An MP4 exported from a phone shows MP4 video, 1920 × 1080, and the exact
duration from the movie header.
An MP3 with embedded artwork tags shows its title, artist and album straight from the ID3 frames.
Good to know
- WebM duration requires parsing the EBML segment index — v1 reports the type only.
- “Unrecognized” is a real answer, not an error: the signature was checked and did not match a covered format.
- For image EXIF specifically, pair with the Exif Stripper to see-and-remove in one flow.
