What it does
Every photo you take carries hidden metadata: EXIF. A phone photo typically stores the GPS coordinates where it was taken, the camera make and model, the exact date and time, exposure settings, and the software that last edited it. Share that file unmodified and you share all of it.
Drop a JPEG or PNG on this tool and it reads the metadata out of the raw bytes - EXIF, GPS, XMP, and IPTC segments for JPEG, tEXt / iTXt / eXIf chunks for PNG. One click rebuilds the file without those segments and downloads a clean copy.
How to use it
- Drag a photo onto the drop zone (or click to browse). JPEG and PNG only.
- Review the metadata table - camera, timestamps, settings, and GPS shown as a decimal lat/lng with a View on map link (OpenStreetMap).
- Click Strip Metadata & Download to save the clean copy. The before/after file sizes show exactly how many bytes of metadata were removed.
A green Clean - no metadata found badge means the file already had nothing to strip.
Examples
What a typical phone photo contains:
Camera-Apple iPhone 15 ProDate / time-2026:08:14 18:42:07GPS-48.858370, 2.294481(Eiffel Tower) - anyone with the file knows where you stoodSoftware-Adobe Lightroom 14.1(from the XMP block an editor added)Exposure-1/120 s,f/1.78,ISO 64,24 mm
After stripping, the same file contains only pixels: same image, same quality, zero metadata.
Good to know
- 100% client-side. The file is parsed in your browser with raw
ArrayBuffercode - no upload, no server, no library. Nothing leaves your machine. - JPEG stripping is lossless. Only metadata segments (APP1/APP13) are dropped; the compressed image data is copied byte-for-byte and is not re-encoded.
- Supported: JPEG (EXIF, XMP, IPTC) and PNG (
tEXt,iTXt,eXIf). Other formats are rejected with a clear error. - Stripping is a copy operation - your original file is never modified on disk.
