What it does
Generates placeholder text: Latin-looking paragraphs with no meaning. Controls sit on the left, the live text renders on the right. Set Paragraphs (1 to 50) and Sentences per paragraph (1 to 20), or start from a preset chip — One-liner, One paragraph, Card body, Article, Stress test. The tool generates the moment it loads and again whenever either number changes; Generate re-rolls the wording without touching the counts. A badge in the output header reports total words and characters. Copy all takes the full text; Download saves it as lorem.txt. The URL carries the shape (?p=3&s=5), so any configuration is a shareable link. Runs entirely in your browser.
How to use it
- Pick a preset chip for a common filler shape, or set Paragraphs (1 to 50, default 3) and Sentences per paragraph (1 to 20, default 5) yourself. Text regenerates on every change.
- Press Generate for a new roll of the same shape — new words, same paragraph and sentence counts.
- Read the word and character totals in the badge above the text.
- Press Copy all to take the text into your mockup, or Download to save it as
lorem.txt(plain text, paragraphs separated by a blank line). - Share the configuration: the address bar reads
?p=<paragraphs>&s=<sentences>. Open that link anywhere and the tool starts with the same shape.
Examples
Each sentence draws 8 to 16 words from the fixed pool, so the totals land in a predictable band. Measured over hundreds of runs:
- One-liner (1 paragraph x 1 sentence): 8 to 16 words, one line — for buttons, table cells, and empty-state hints.
- Default (3 x 5): 153 to 209 words, about 1,000 to 1,400 characters — a typical article body for testing a reading view.
- Article (5 x 7): 386 to 462 words — a full blog-post or landing-page section.
- Stress test (20 x 12): roughly 2,800 to 3,000 words — pagination and infinite-scroll tests.
- The ceiling (50 x 20): roughly 11,700 to 12,200 words, about 78,000 characters — maximum-volume layout stress.
Every sentence draws from the same fixed word pool, so two runs with the same counts produce different text with the same rhythm.
How lorem ipsum works
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin. The source is Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC), a philosophical treatise on ethics. Around the 1500s a printer took a passage, cut it up, and scrambled it into nonsense - a type specimen that showed a page of text without saying anything. The classic opening, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, is those first mutilated fragments; the tool’s word pool is built from the same vocabulary.
Why placeholder text is deliberately meaningless. A layout mockup needs text that is structure-real but content-meaningless:
- Structure-real: word lengths, sentence lengths, and paragraph rhythm look like a real language, so line breaks, column heights, and hyphenation behave as they will in production.
- Content-meaningless: nobody can read it. Reviewers judge spacing, hierarchy, and contrast instead of proofreading the copy. Real text gets skimmed and critiqued; lorem ipsum gets looked at, not through.
That second property is the whole trick. Meaningful filler anchors the eye; meaningless filler stays transparent. A reviewer who starts reading your placeholder has stopped evaluating your layout.
The known criticism. Lorem ipsum is uniform: no long words, no short ones, no numbers or punctuation variety. If your design must survive worst-case text - German compounds, URLs, all-caps strings - test with those too. Placeholder text de-risks the average case, not the extreme one.
Good to know
- Same counts, new words. Generate re-rolls the pool; the paragraph and sentence structure stays.
- Shareable shape. The URL carries the paragraph and sentence counts (
?p=3&s=5), so you can link someone the exact configuration; out-of-range values clamp into bounds (1-50 paragraphs, 1-20 sentences). - Download saves the current text as
lorem.txt— plain UTF-8, one blank line between paragraphs. - Private: generation runs locally in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
