What it does
The Markdown Table Generator converts plain delimited data into a clean, GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) table. Paste rows separated by pipes, commas, tabs, semicolons, or whitespace, and it emits a properly padded table with a separator row and per-column alignment markers. It auto-detects the delimiter, escapes literal | characters inside cells so they don’t break the table, transposes rows to columns, and parses pasted GFM tables back into editable data. Everything runs 100% client-side - your data never leaves the browser.
How to use it
- Pick a preset (3×3 demo or Alignment demo) or paste your data into Data input on the left - the table renders live on the right.
- Pick a delimiter (or leave it on Auto - it guesses from your data and shows what it detected).
- Toggle the Header row switch on if your first row is a header.
- Choose a column alignment (None, Left, Center, Right) for
:--/:-:/--:markers. - Use Paste a Markdown table to import an existing GFM table (the
---separator row is dropped automatically), Transpose to swap rows and columns. - Copy the result, Download it as
table.md, or share the URL - your input and options are encoded in it.

A cell value of a|b is rendered as a\|b so it stays inside its column.
Good to know
- Auto-detect scores each candidate delimiter by frequency and cross-line consistency; structural delimiters (pipe, tab) outrank punctuation, which outrank whitespace.
- Validation notices: ragged rows (a cell count that differs from the widest row - usually a paste artifact) and empty header cells are flagged as warnings under the output. Ragged rows are padded with blank cells in the rendered table.
- Import roundtrip: pasting a rendered Markdown table drops the separator row and reloads the cells as pipe-separated data, so a README table becomes editable input again.
- Shareable: your input, delimiter, header, and alignment are encoded in the URL (
d,h,a,tparams), so a link reproduces the exact table. Links made before the split-layout upgrade still resolve. - Private: all parsing happens locally - safe for sensitive data.
